In community pharmacy where caring for customers’ health is top priority, it can be natural for pharmacy staff to hold back from upselling additional products or services to avoid coming across as too ‘salesy’.

However, offering a complementary product or service could mean a pharmacy is actually going above and beyond for customers.

The 2019 Pharmacy Assistant National Conference (PA2019) will address this often overlooked subject with a session for pharmacy assistants, titled ‘Why selling to your customers is caring for your customers’.

Session presenter, Sales & Business Growth Consultant Nicky Miklos-Woodley, will help pharmacy assistants to discover how ‘sales’ is actually a service when it comes to ensuring customers’ needs are met.

“It’s imperative that anybody who’s in a service based role understands the importance of truly viewing selling as a service,” Nicky said.

“Pharmacy staff are the experts in the industry so it’s important to share knowledge and information with customers to ensure they get the best service and best products that are available to them.”

Nicky said it’s important for pharmacy staff to stay authentic and customer focused when using sales techniques as a way to show genuine care.

“We often let our own beliefs of what selling means to us get in the way of truly helping our customers.

“If you can turn your beliefs around to see selling as helping and serving instead of taking advantage of somebody,  then you’re making it about your customer and not about you.

“At the end of the day, we are all here to deliver exceptional customer experience and we want customers to come back because that’s an indication that we’ve been able to help them in the best way possible.

“This is the true essence of effective selling.”
